Census town


According to the census approach, a census town is one which is not statutorily notified and administered as a town, but whose population has attained urban characteristics. Following criteria are to be met to be a census town.

  • More than 5,000 population
  • At least 75% of main working population is employed in on-agricultural sectors.
  • A minimum density of 400 persons per km

As per the 2011 census, there were 3,894 census towns.
