Affiliate

The term is interpreted from a corporate angle.

An affiliate is an associated company of a parent company if the latter has less than 50% shareholding in the affiliated company. This means that in the affiliated firm the parent company has minority shareholding only. On the other hand, in the case of a subsidiary firm, the parent company has more than 50% share. So affiliate and subsidiary are compared in terms of degree of shareholding.
